Stealing in the virtual world is a crime in real life

Posted on 11/19/2007

The Dutch 17-year-old boy accused of stealing virtual furniture is one of the 6 million people coming from over 30 countries in the world who every month plays with Habbo Hotel.
Habbo Hotel is a virtual 3D social networking world in which users can create their characters, decorate their own rooms and play a number of games, paying with Habbo Credits, which they have to buy with real cash.

The Police, contacted by the website’s owners, arrested the boy accusing him of virtual theft and scamming: he wanted his virtual alter ego to have a nice house without spending money so he illegally entered other users’ accounts, stole their furniture and put it directly inside his own hotel room. The virtual furniture was worth 4.000 Euros, bought with real money by the victims.
